HELEF II, 2021 ‘By seeing the works as decor, the space becomes a stageset where a freeplay in meaning arises. A so called in between-zone and a deeply feld need of contemporary rituals.’ Very short film by Tom van Veen Camera & edit by Djoewe Walta Character 1, Blue: Turgay Onatli Character 2, Black: Selena Onatli Choreography & decor by Tom van Veen First man: Simon Wagter Choreography dance: Ilknur Demirbag & Turgay Onatli Costume by: Vincent van de Waal, Patta x Bonne Suits Big thanks to: Het HEM, Hanna Onatli, Itimat Onatli, Elize Render & Paula Walta Textual response by Dr. Marc Boumeester, known for The Desire of the Medium. Media-philospher & art-theorist. “When viewing the installation "Helef II" at first a feeling of unease skulks upon you. Not because the actions depicted necessarily convey something negative, but because simultaneously you are part of a series of actions and yet you are also completely outside of them. It is a ritual with signs, but these signs cannot be read by the outsider (and perhaps not by those in the ritual either). The actions in the ritual unfold with a dogged force and an almost ecstatic mania for some form of control. How this inward communication relates to us remains unclear, but it seems certain that this ritual is of great importance of the players involved in it. In a second interpretation the ritual provides with more comforting affects. These are not random actors, these are not random actions, there is a certain degree of care and beauty in the interplay between actions, actors and objects. Despite its hermetic nature, the dance itself provides with some sort of salvation, albeit it appears obsolesced long before it was even conceived. A deliverance of spirit commenced by an effort in need to be made in order for other events not to occur, similar to symbolic acts of religious expression. When suddenly the movements stop, a tangible heaviness remains that could easily be indicating a next set of movements, perhaps the same routine, perhaps in the same order, perhaps with a similar ending. In this sense, the entire performance is a sign: an indecipherable but significant meta-sign with the incantatory power of absolution. As a result one is left with a thought of expression that holds no internal logic, yet still we are grateful that is has occurred. Just like life itself.”
